character's full name: Guilmon
character is from: Digimon Tamers
school year: None. He'd be a sort of really talkative pet, if that's allowed.

background:
Guilmon is the partner of Takato, the goggleboy of Digimon Tamers. Like other goggle-partners, he's a big firebreathing dinosaur/lizard-type thing although he's inexplicably cuter than any dinosaur has a right to be. Unlike other goggle-partners, he gets a whole lot of development time throughout the season, and eventually has a pretty well-rounded personality - more than some of the human Tamers can say.

What makes Guilmon special is that - at least, in the Tamers universe - Guilmon is not an official Digimon. There aren't any cards of him like there are for the other Digimon, other D-Arcs can't read his data, and he has no idea what the Digital World is like until he goes there with Takato and friends. He's actually a fanmade, designed by Takato during the first episode of Tamers (which is appropriately subtitled "The Digimon I Created"). The Digi-Gnomes created his body out of old data Dust Packets, but he doesn't become a fully-conscious individual until he Realises.

Of course, fully-conscious doesn't mean fully-coherent. When Guilmon is first born, he's basically a baby. He doesn't really talk except in sentence fragments, and he sees nothing wrong with setting fire to anything he doesn't like the look of, mostly including rats. Takato's first objective is getting Guilmon used to the conventions of the Real World, but it's a tall order. He starts off by telling Guilmon to stay in an alley for a few hours, because he's too big to stay at home while Takato goes to school, and leaves him a load of bread in case he gets hungry. It's a simple plan, but the first problem occurs when Guilmon doesn't know what food is. The second, bigger problem occurs when Guilmon gets bored and goes to school anyway, where he scares the headteacher and inadvertently sets off the fire alarm, among other things.

But Takato soon discovers how Guilmon never means any harm when he goes up to the school roof and finds Guilmon still bursting to play. He perseveres with his Taming, and meets two other Tamers his age, Jenrya and Ruki. Guilmon quickly warms up to Jenrya's partner Terriermon, who's not as childish as him but just as playful. He takes a little longer to make friends with Renamon, possibly because throughout the early episodes she spends a good amount of time trying to kill him. But they do eventually start to get along - Renamon considers Guilmon interesting because his personality is basically the opposite of hers, while Guilmon mentions more than once how Renamon "always seems to know things".

Guilmon and Takato also discover Culumon, a partnerless Baby II Digimon who can't fight. Unknown to everyone including Culumon himself, Culumon isn't a real Digimon; he's the "light of evolution" given a Digimon form. But Guilmon quickly takes to the little guy, and after half an hour of playing with each other Culumon convinces him to go outside and draw pentagrams on the school football pitch. Or something.

After several episodes of killing Wild Ones (Digimon who Realise, but don't have partners), Guilmon meets Impmon, apparently another partnerless Digimon. Impmon isn't innocent like Culumon, though - he gets his fun from throwing fireballs at random strangers in parks, which results in all the kids Takato's age being put under curfew. Impmon convinces Guilmon to come along with him one night, and he goes along out of curiosity, but doesn't find it as much fun as Impmon does. Even so, Takato is livid when he finds out, making Guilmon depressed because he doesn't really understand why. He's still depressed when he goes out to fight a newly-Realised Devidramon, and ends up being pinned to a wall by his neck. With perfect timing, Jenrya and Terriermon turn up at this point with some news for Takato: they found Impmon hanging around, and he's to blame for the mess earlier, not Guilmon. Happy that he's finally forgiven, Guilmon finds the power to evolve for the first time, into the Adult-level Growmon. It then takes an entire crackish episode for him to revert back.

The first real villains to appear in the season are the secret government organisation Hypnos, headed by one Mitsuo Yamaki. Yamaki believes (at first) that all Digimon are parasitic pseudo-lifeforms that don't belong on Earth. This extends not only to the random Wild Ones that appear and are deleted every single episode, but to the children's partners as well - including Guilmon. So he uploads a program called Yuggoth to the network, which erases Digimon but leaves buildings standing. Yuggoth almost manages to claim Guilmon straight after being introduced, but the three Tamers team up and rescue him from the Digital Zone he was being held captive in. Afterwards, Yamaki apparently gives up on the partner Digimon for the time being and contents himself with stalking the kids instead.

One day, Yamaki turns up after a fight with a DarkLizarmon, and asks if he can take Guilmon away to experiment on. Naturally, Takato refuses, but this somehow causes him to go and angst on top of a park fence. He admits to have being scared when Growmon first appeared, and he's worried about what will happen if Guilmon evolves again. In the first of one of his surprisingly deep moments, Guilmon tells Takato that he can evolve too, and the scene ends happily.

Around this time, or a bit later, the events of the movie "Battle of Adventurers" occur. Takato goes to visit his Okinawan cousin Kai Urazoe, bringing Guilmon along in a suitcase. If the movie happens before episode 14 of the main series, this is the first time we see MegaloGrowmon outside the opening credits. Guilmon doesn't do much else in the movie, though. It's mostly about Minami.

Whenever episode 14 does happen, it's when Yamaki uploads a meaner version of Yuggoth onto the network. It's called Shaggai, and theoretically is capable of deleting every single Digimon in the world all at once. However, where Yuggoth sort of failed (it could be destroyed by sufficiently powerful Digimon, or avoided), Shaggai really fails. For one thing, none of the kids' Digimon are particularly affected by it. Yamaki doesn't take this well, yelling at Guilmon and trying to strangle Jenrya when he discovers it. For another thing, what Shaggai really ends up doing is breaching the barrier between the Real and Digital Worlds, so even stronger Digimon who couldn't get through before can now Realise.

Among the stronger Digimon who can now Realise are the twelve Devas, Perfect-levels based off the Chinese zodiac and serving the Holy Beast Zhuqiaomon. Their mission is to capture Culumon, and if they can make a few of the ugly little humans scream while doing so then that's a bonus. The first Deva to appear is Mihiramon, who descends onto the top of the Hypnos towers right after Shaggai is launched. Guilmon manages to evolve to the Perfect MegaloGrowmon to deal with him, and everyone is happy except Yamaki, but after the fight MegaloGrowmon appears to temporarily forget Takato's name.

Seven more Devas eventually Realise, each of them increasingly more powerful. The last one is the pig, Vikararamon, who causes earthquakes and lays waste to most of Shinjuku. The combined power of MegaloGrowmon, Rapidmon, Taomon and the kids screaming in the middle of the road manages to defeat it, but then another Deva reveals itself. Makuramon flings insults at Hypnos and humanity in general, before taking off with Culumon.

The Tamers, including Juri who got her Digivice last episode, decide to follow Makuramon to the Digital World, so they can get Culumon back. The problem is that nobody knows where a convenient Digital Zone might be. Guilmon is the one who eventually finds the portal, completely by accident, in the tunnel at the back of his home. Shortly afterwards, as part of the requisite tearful farewell, Takato finally introduces Guilmon to his parents, and Guilmon promises that they'll come back safely if the bakery starts making Guilmon-shaped bread. The next morning, Yamaki turns up at Guilmon's home and gives the children a comm device, so they can contact the Real World if they have to. Surprised by the sudden change of heart, the team heads into the Digital Zone.

The Digital World ends up being not quite what the team expected. Discarded Dust Packets of data are everywhere, the Real World is visible as a giant green ball in the sky, anything that looks like food probably isn't, and the water is only wet if you believe it is. Not long after the Tamers arrive, a Data Stream appears and teleports Ruki, Renamon, Hirokazu and Kenta away. They're reunited later, sans Ruki, with the help of the "legendary Tamer" Ryou Akiyama. Ruki reappears once Ryou's Digimon forces him to take off, having found Culumon, and everyone is happy because they can go home again. Except they don't know how to, and when Takato and Jenrya try the comm device Yamaki gave them, it's apparently broken.

Just then, Beelzebumon turns up. He's actually Impmon's Ultimate-level, and Renamon manages to guess this, but he denies it at first. What he does say is that he's on a mission from the Digimon god to kill all of them, and has the guns to prove it. Before he can carry this out, a huge storm brews - caused by employees of Hypnos in the Real World running Shaggai again without Yamaki's supervision. In the confusion, Beelzebumon drives away and another Deva, Chatsuramon, recaptures Culumon. Renamon evolves to Taomon and manages to protect most of the kids from the worst of the storm. However, Jenrya, Terriermon and Takato fall into a Data Stream and disappear... leaving Guilmon behind.

Separated from his partner for the first time since entering the Digital World, Guilmon starts acting noticeably depressed. When Kenta asks him if they can pretend to be Tamer and Digimon while Takato isn't around, Guilmon doesn't pay him much attention, saying that he only has one Tamer - which seems a bit out of character for him, when in earlier episodes he never minded playing pretend with other kids. He's still loyal to the team, though, and takes part in the fight against the Orochimon terrorising a Geckmon village, which ends with Hirokazu becoming a Tamer as well. To Guardromon, not to Guilmon.

As the team are wandering through the Digital World looking for Takato and Jen (and Guilmon has evolved into Growmon with absolutely no explanation how), Growmon suddenly hears Takato's voice and stops. The others aren't completely convinced, but Growmon is sure that Takato was calling for him, and suddenly dives into the nearest Data Stream. Since he was carrying Hirokazu and Kenta, the rest of the team have no choice but to follow him. And, sure enough, the Data Stream dumps all of them right next to Takato, Jenrya and Jen's little sister Shiuchon, who were in the middle of being attacked by Beelzebumon. Rapidmon has already been beaten, and Shiuchon's new partner Lopmon is in no position to be fighting. So Takato and Growmon have a brief joyful reunion, before Beelzebumon reminds them "uh, I am meant to be killing you, you know".

The battle is now taken up by Juri's partner, Leomon. Despite Beelzebumon being two levels higher, Leomon actually puts up a good fight. For a moment, he actually looks like he's winning... until Beelzebumon takes his gloves off and impales Leomon on his hand. As Juri goes hysterical, Leomon tells her solemnly that this was his fate all along. Then he dissolves into data, Beelzebumon absorbs him, and the display on Juri's D-Arc fades into static. Kind of predictable - Leomon always seems to end up dying in every season he turns up in.

Takato goes slightly mental at this point. He's been angsting about Guilmon's origin for a couple of episodes, he's always had a crush on Juri, he's just seen a member of his team murdered - he's generally confused, and that confusion turns into anger pretty quickly. Of course, this means that Growmon goes mental as well. Takato orders him to evolve to Perfect and take Beelzebumon down, not caring about using Blue Cards. Surprisingly, this works, but MegaloGrowmon still isn't a match for Beelzebumon. Despite most of the other Tamers trying to deter him, Takato tries to force MegaloGrowmon to evolve again. This time, it goes wrong. The D-Arc that Guilmon hatched from falls to the floor, shattering on contact - and Takato is stuck with the dark-evolved Megidramon.

Megidramon is... really ugly. It's also very dangerous - the Digital Hazard on its armour starts to destabilise the Digital World, and the resulting disruption is even visible from Earth, as we see Yamaki and Jen's dad watch hazard symbols multiply all over the network. It starts trying to eat Beelzebumon and initially overpowers him, but Beelzebumon retaliates by absorbing Makuramon's, Rapidmon's and Taomon's data in the space of about two minutes. The extra data gives him enough power to shatter Megidramon's Digital Hazard, and it collapses unconscious.

Of course, this provides an excellent opportunity for Takato to angst some more. Which he does. Beelzebumon notices this, and decides to kill him first, because still targets are easier to hit. But his shot is impeded by Takato suddenly having another bizarre hallucination. Afterwards, Megidramon has reverted back to a slightly battered Guilmon, and Beelzebumon's bullets are knocked away. It's Guilmon who decides that the only way they can beat Beelzebumon for sure is to literally fight together - become one. And so, against all logic, that's what the two of them do. After an evolution sequence involving naked!Takato, they become Guilmon's true Ultimate, Dukemon.

It takes a while for the other Tamers to realise exactly what happened. Eventually, they stop trying to see if Takato fell into a hole in the ground and start cheering him on. The fight between the two Ultimate-levels takes the best part of an episode, but eventually Beelzebumon's motorbike is destroyed and Dukemon is in a position to strike a finishing blow. Just before it connects, Juri suddenly cries out that she doesn't want any more fighting - and Dukemon's sword goes harmlessly under Beelzebumon's arm. Beelzebumon is allowed to escape, although he isn't entirely sure why. Meanwhile, Dukemon devolves back to Guilmon and Takato, who receives a new golden D-Arc and completely ignores the sobbing Juri next to him.

The rest of the Digital World arc doesn't involve Guilmon or Takato much. The team head to Zhuqiaomon's castle, apparently defeat him with Terriermon's Ultimate-level SaintGalgomon, only for the Holy Beast to revive and start attacking them again. Then another Holy Beast appears, interrupting the battle, and introduces itself as Qinglongmon. It tells the kids that the real enemy wasn't Beelzebumon, or the Devas, or any of the Holy Beasts - it's actually a little Pac-Man-like program called the D-Reaper, which in recent times has started to mutate into blobs of pink suicide jelly that delete everything they touch. The reason Culumon was sent to the Real World was to protect him from the D-Reaper; the reason Zhuqiaomon wanted Culumon back was that he wanted the Digimon to be able to defend themselves. After hearing this, Culumon releases the "light of evolution", evolving everything in the Digital World except for the kids' partners up to Ultimate.

Meanwhile, an Ark to take the kids back to Shinjuku is completed by Jenrya's dad and his friends. It arrives in the Digital World, and everybody present quickly clambers aboard... except Takato. Guilmon tries to get him to board as well, but Takato doesn't want to. Ruki and Renamon went out to look for Impmon a little while ago, and he won't just leave them behind. Then Guilmon tries to get off the Ark, but Takato tells him to stay, reminding him of what he promised Takato's dad. Minutes pass, Ruki fails to show up and the Ark starts to move, leaving Takato behind. In a really touching scene (and that's not meant sarcastically), a desperate Guilmon pleads with the Ark to wait, even though there's no indication it can hear him. But it does stop, Ruki comes back with Impmon, Kenta suddenly gets a partner for no apparent reason, everyone is :D and the Tamers head off home.

Back in Tokyo, nothing much happens for a little while. All the parents are tearfully reunited with their children, except Juri's parents, who couldn't be assed to go and pick her up. Takato decides to escort her home, and Guilmon gets to come along, where he watches Takato attempt to confess his feelings for Juri and royally screw it up. But Juri doesn't pay attention anyway, for a reason nobody knows yet - she's actually an "agent" of the D-Reaper, which followed the children home and also kidnapped the real Juri back in the Digital World so it could feed off her angst. Or something. And sure enough, as soon as Juri's father drives off with ADR-01, Takato looks up at a TV screen and sees pink suicide jelly engulfing the Hypnos towers.

A lot of stuff happens in the season's final story arc, as the Tamers regroup and start trying to get the real Juri out of the D-Reaper sphere she's stuck in. Not surprisingly, most of it doesn't concern Guilmon, who's already had more development time than most of the secondary Tamers anyway. The main thing we see from him is that he's actually mature enough to disagree with Takato now, which never really happened before. One occurence of this is that while the two of them are stuck in the D-Reaper Zone, Guilmon repeatedly tries to convince Takato that the ADR-01 isn't the real Juri, although Takato refuses to believe him until it starts growing wings.

At the last minute, Yamaki and friends pull out the questionably-named Operation Doodlebug, which seems to be the answer to everything. The D-Reaper's Mother and Cable agents are sucked back into the Digital World, where the program reverts to its harmless Pac-Man incarnation. The red jelly engulfing Tokyo subsides. The matrix evolved Digimon turn back into the kids and Child-levels once inside the D-Reaper Zone, but Juri is saved and Kenta conveniently turns up to rescue everyone, having done basically nothing since ADR-01 revealed itself. All is right with the world... or not. At the park, while the Tamers are savouring their victory, all of the Digimon suddenly devolve to their Baby II forms. As Jen's dad explains, they forgot to tell us one small detail about Operation Doodlebug: as a side-effect of getting rid of the D-Reaper, all of the Digimon will have to return to the Digital World too.

Naturally, none of the Tamers are pleased to hear this news. Especially not Takato, who holds onto Guilmon (now Gigimon) and cries like he hasn't done for seven whole episodes. But Guilmon doesn't cry. He makes Takato promise that they'll play together again someday, before floating off towards the Digital Zone. As the portal begins to fade, we hear Guilmon call out that it's going to be fun, that he'll be waiting for Takato. And since only the human characters appear in the CD Drama set a year later, that's the last we see of Guilmon...

...until Runaway Digimon Express, where he and all the other Digimon are back on Earth like nothing ever happened. This is never explained, but we can assume that everything happened like Takato talked about in his drama track and Yamaki/the Wild Bunch have set up a new Ark. Early on in the movie, in an attempt to stop a rogue train that's actually *gasp!* a Digimon, Takato jumps aboard and tells Guilmon to fetch all the other Tamers, presumably so they can jump aboard too. This is a nice display of trust, which contrasts with the second episode of Tamers where Takato couldn't even trust Guilmon to stay in a box for a few hours.

After that is accomplished, Ruki starts to attack Takato and Renamon with a wrench, and tentacle-eyeballs flood the city. This Guilmon would disappear in the middle of that battle, devolve back to Guilmon, and end up here. He'll never get to know how the movie ends, but that's okay because the ending is a bit anticlimactic in any case.

I'm just summarising the anime again, aren't I? Anyway, onto personality...

Because he's effectively the youngest character in the entire cast, Guilmon has an incredibly childish personality even after he's outgrown his initial baby stage. He spends most of his time playing, whether on his own or with other Digimon, and when he's not playing he's eating bread stolen from the Matsuda bakery. His innocence endears him to most of Takato's classmates, even the ones who don't end up Tamers. He's also pretty friendly and outgoing, even befriending the troublemaker Impmon before anyone else does - although Impmon isn't all that friendly back to him. But as a flip side to this, he can be overly trusting and easily manipulated, which is again something done by Impmon early in the season. Although he never means any harm, his naivete means he'll often end up in trouble and find it hard to explain why.

Occasionally he turns "feral" - his pupils narrow, he'll stop talking and he'll start attacking things without paying any attention to what his Tamer is saying. This mostly happens in the Real World, when he detects another Digimon nearby. As he matures, he stops being so animalistic, but the slit-pupils still happen and he'll be more violent than he is normally, like when he tries to bite Yamaki.

He also has a more mature side to his character, and can have surprisingly insightful observations at times. Mostly the purpose of this is to snap Takato out of his angst, and that doesn't happen very often.

And... that's Guilmon! That was more work than I thought it would be.
